THE PROVENCE  COLORADO

The Provence Colorado is unfortunately now forbidden to riders. The landowners' association seems to prefer charging 50-person busess ... rather than promoting eco-friendly horseback riding tourism. Furthermore, this area, which we once knew as wild, has become a developed tourist park with no appeal for riders.

The Provence Colorado is located north of the Luberon in the Vaucluse region. It is a former open-pit ochre quarry, in operation between 1871 and 1993. Its colors come from an exceptional quantity of iron extracted from seawater, concentrated, and buried in the excrement of crustaceans that lived on and in the sandbank at a time when the sea was warm and shallow. The iron then combined with the minerals present in the sand to form an initial, highly ferruginous clay of a gray-green color. Over time, erosion sculpted colorful formations reminiscent of the landscapes of the western United States... hence the name of Provence Colorado !
